Solent Synergy -
Newsletter Issue 3

Well, what a year!   Throughout 2008, we have helped innovative companies in the Solent region in a variety of different ways.   These have included providing help for sourcing funding, assisting with business plans, holding useful and topical events, as well as connecting companies to key industry players.   As the New Year approaches, plans are in place to help even more companies in 2009.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year.
We look forward to working with you in 2009.
Best wishes,
The Solent Synergy Team.

NEWS: Helping to keep local companies up-to-date on
recruitment trends and employment law

On 25th November, Solent Synergy ran an event titled "Addressing the Challenges of Recruiting and Retaining Staff" at Quob Park in Wickham.   Through the combined recruitment and legal expertise of our workshop speakers, Adrian Gunn and Clive Dobbin, the workshop focused on the key issues of recruitment and retention in the technology sector, along with providing an update on employment law.

Adrian Gunn, Managing Director of Matchtech Group plc, a major recruitment company based in Whiteley, highlighted ways in which companies can overcome the current skills shortage by taking on industrial placements, hiring graduates, plus using recruitment agencies.   He also informed attendees about what talented staff look for in their jobs and provided techniques to help companies to retain these staff.

Clive Dobson, Head of Employment at Southampton law firm Paris Smith, informed attendees about the current issues surrounding discrimination, data protection and immigration.   Clive emphasised the importance of keeping up to date with employment law for companies of all sizes and suggested that regularly attending employment law events and receiving newsletters would help smaller companies keep updated.

Dezineforce signs-up a number of new subscribers to their web-based, on-demand design simulation and optimisation subscription service.

Whiteley-based start-up company Dezineforce is having great success in adding subscribers to their service.   Aerospace suppliers Hyde Group Engineering, the airframe and aero engine engineering company, and Contour Premium Aircraft seating, supplier of fully flat seats to the leading airlines, are recent additions to their growing subscriber list.   Hyde Group will use the service to verify their component design, whilst Contour will use the Dezineforce tools to optimise the design of the mechanism for their lie-flat aircraft seats.

Global architectural engineers Arup are using the Dezineforce tools to help them meet tight project deadlines and to improve their designs.   Engineering consultancy companies Virrtech and Enabling Technologies have added the Dezineforce tools to their portfolio of offerings and in this way will generate additional business.   Dezineforce is confident that they will add further subscribers from these industry areas, together with companies from the oil and gas and renewable energy industries, automotive design and motor sport in the coming weeks.

Solent Synergy helped to attract local businesses to an event in July run by Dezineforce, which showcased exactly what they had to offer.   Dezineforce also benefitted from the opportunity to present at the Solent Synergy Entrepreneurs' Club, which proved to be very successful.  Professor Simon Cox, Chief Scientific Officer at Dezineforce remarked,"Having access to Solent Synergy's professional support and access to its strong business network, has been extremely helpful to our company during this exciting, high growth phase."
